What is an airport Transit visa?

An Airport Transit Visa is a document issued to passengers who need to change flights at a Schengen airport. It allows them to stop and wait for their flight to their destination country in a Schengen airport’s international transit area.

This visa, however, does not allow its holder to leave an airport’s international transit area, even if the traveler must wait overnight.

An airport transit visa allows you to change planes at a Dutch airport and continue your journey to a location outside the transit Zone. The visa also known as an ‘A’ visa does not grant you entry into the Netherlands or any other Schengen country. This means you are not permitted to leave the airport or its international zone.

Please keep in mind that if you need to transit through more than one airport within the Schengen Area, you are no longer eligible for an Airport Transit Visa. You should instead apply for a regular Schengen Visa).

This is because flights between two or more Schengen countries are considered “domestic,” even if only for transit purposes.

You will also need to apply for a regular Schengen Visa if you need to leave the airport to catch another flight within the same country.

Here you can also apply for 48 hours transit visa or 96 hours transit visa for a short stay.

What Is the airport Transit Zone?

The transit zone is a section of an international airport where you can wait until your flight to your destination is ready to board. If you don’t leave the airport, transit zones allow you to wait in the airport without going through immigration.

Types of airport Transit visa

Airport transit visas (ATVs) are classified into three types:

  1. A one-way ATV allows for one-way transit through a Schengen country;
  2. A return ATV allows for return airport transit through one or two Schengen countries.
  3. A multiple ATV allows for multiple transits through one or more Schengen countries.
